Solid state bonding of Si(3)N(4) ceramics with Fe-Cr alloy interlayersFunded under: JRC-ADVMAT 2C
Sintered Si(3)N(4) ceramics were diffusion bonded using Fe and Fe-Cr(5-15 wt%) alloy foils as interlayers. Joining was performed between 1100 and 1300 C in Ar under a uniaxial pressure of 50 MPa. Average joint strengths approaching 100 % of the ceramic fracture strength (800 Mpa) have been achieved. These depended on the joining conditions, most notably temperature and Cr-content of the alloy, with the best ones being 1300 C and 15 wt%Cr. The interfacial microstructure has been characterised.
