Abstract

This report summarises the results of a research programme on the radiopurity of the Borexino scintillator. The programme focuses on three major aspects: (i) quantitative ultratrace determination of radioimpurities in commercial organic scintillator solvents; (ii) measurement of recontamination rates and levels; (iii) development of methods for repurification, particularly for cave operation. This work has covered several solvents and a wide range of impurities, typifying broad classes of materials and contamination sources. Commercial purities of the main solvents are within repurification range. Rates for recontamination of different classes and impurity types have been measured and the impurity patterns of contamination at different stages from manufacture to measurement can be qualitatively modelled.
