FORMENTOR : Real-time expert systems for loss control
This paper describes FORMENTOR, a real-time expert system that offers on-line decision support to operators of complex plant who are faced with unusual and potentially hazardous situations. After the overall project background and philosophy have been described, the essential functionalities of such a system are outlined. The paper then focuses on one of the pilot applications developed: a supervisory and decision support system for operators of an extractive distillation unit of a petrochemical plant. The most important techniques and models used are briefly discussed. Knowledge bases built on functional, structural and behavioural models of the plant and incorporating operator heuristics provide the knowledge necessary for supporting many of the required functionalities. Finally, the distributed and object-oriented software architecture, which is a key technique for such systems, is illustrated.
