The main aim of this research was to improve the Van der Waals equation of state in order to provide a model capable of describing the PVT (pressure-volume-temperature) and VLE (vapour-liquid equilibrium) behaviour of pure compounds related to coal liquids. The development of the model is outlined and the volume dependency functions for the parameters are derived. The critical point is then evaluated, since the values of the coefficients at that point provide a good basis for calculating volume and temperature corrections. The key equations are evaluated using VLE- and PVT-data to show the strengths and weaknesses of the equations. Finally, conclusions are drawn about the applicability of the model. In the second part of the report additional, supporting methods used within the framework of this research are described in detail.
