Abstract

The aim of this work was to determine the influence of the following parameters on combustion conditions in a spreader-stoker furnace: (i) the main characteristics of coal and coal particle size distribution; (ii) trajectory of the particles adjusted by variation of the spreader rotation speed; (iii) distribution of the coal layer on ignition of the grate which can be adjusted by varying the grate rotation speed; (iv) boiler load; (v) distribution of the combustion air temperature; (vi) ratio of re-injected fly ash. A spread-stoker boiler in operation since 1986 at the Mazingarbe test facility was used for this study. It was an industrial pilot of 12 MWth, working continuously and producing 380 C superheated steam for a steam network. Results obtained can be used to gain better knowledge of combustion conditions in the spreader-stoker furnace and to extend the range of coals used.
