Abstract

This paper describes the purification and chemical and isotopic characterisation of alpha-Fe(2)O(3), containing iron that was enriched in 54Fe and 56Fe. The paper explains how iron isotope mixtures with the very accurately-known n(54Fe)/n(56Fe) abundance ratio were gravimetrically prepared from these purified alpha-Fe(2)O(3) compounds. These mixtures were used to determine the source fractionation correction factor, and enabled absolute isotope abundance ratios for the IRMM-014 to be obtained. An enriched 57Fe spike solution is being prepared and will be available in the near future.
