The lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) system is aimed at the control of the plasma current profile by driving a significant part of the plasma current alone or in combination with two other additional heating methods. This paper concentrates mainly on work done at JET, including: (i) a description of the technical features of the JET prototype system; (ii) the results obtained and main physics output - in particular the synergistic effects between lower hybrid waves and ion cyclotron waves are summarised; (iii) a description and status of the full LHCD system; (iv) the prospects for the use of LHCD on JET and consideration of the long-term aspects of LHCD on a reactor.
