Abstract

Rare earth (R) metals and compounds are known to possess very interesting and complicated magnetic properties. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility in a large temperature range for a complete series of RPd(3) compounds have been made. The question of magnetic ordering had not, however, been addressed. With a view to understanding the magnetic behaviour of these compounds, self-consistent band structure calculations were performed for LaPd(3), CaPd(3), PrPd(3) and NdPd(3). Calculations predict magnetic ordering only in PrPd(3) and NdPd(3) and are thus consistent with the experimental findings.
