Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

As part of the HYDRE project (water resource monitoring to aid regional agricultural and environmental policy making), the Joint Research Centre is collaborating with four pilot regions in the Mediterranean zone in developing a system for monitoring water resources using agro-meteorological models and NOAA AVHRR satellite data. The project aims to publish a monthly water situation bulletin, on which water management decisions can be based, and to make increasing use of regional information to obtain a structural analysis of the water needs of each region. The satellite data are processed using different computer programs, enabling environmental indicators to be calculated for the monitoring of vegetation and water conditions in large regions. Results from the two processing sequences are managed by a geographical information system, enabling all information from different sources to be analysed simultaneously and presented in map or table form.
