Joint Research Centre Ispra EMEP Station : Air quality monitoring since 1986
EMEP (European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme) is a co-operative programme for the monitoring and evaluation of the long-range transmission of air pollutants in Europe. It has three main objectives: (i) collection of emission data; (ii) measurement of air and precipitation quality; (iii) modelling of atmospheric dispersion. An EMEP station was established at Ispra in 1986 and has operated on a regular basis in the extended measurement programme on 24-hour sampling of air, atmospheric particulates and deposition. The measurement programme and sampling and measurement techniques are presented, and results for the period January 1986 to June 1993 for the monthly average concentrations of some selected primary pollutants are shown.
