Abstract

The aim of this project was to demonstrate the viability of operating an industrial gas turbine generating set on coal derived slagger gas. Rolls-Royce operated an industrial gas generator on bottled simulated slagger gas at its Ansty facility and British Gas operated an Olympus 30 MW generating set at its Westfield Development Centre. The test programme specified that, following commissioning on natural gas fuel, the set would be operated on medium Btu gas supplied from the British Gas/Lurgi slagging gasifier. In addition, the engine was used as a test vehicle to establish exhaust emission levels at various engine powers and the effect of various levels of steam/water injection. The effect on engine components when operating on highly sulphurous fuel was also to be established. This report gives details of the installation, its operation and results, and publicity, commercialisation and other developments of the project.
