Antikythira photovoltaic plant
The aim of this project was to examine and evaluate the technical and economic viability of solar energy utilisation as a power source, by means of photovoltaic conversion to electrical energy. This was to be achieved autonomously, with a central photovoltaic station as the only energy source which fed a small grid with the electricity requirements of a small community on the island of Antikythira. Twelve remote houses were also supplied by twelve autonomous PV units. The aim was that the total power output should match energy consumption, which in summer is 60 to 70 % higher than in winter. This method of supplying electricity to a community in a remote island with access difficulties and lack of local infrastructures was also to be evaluated, while the social acceptance of solar energy as a power source was to be monitored. This report presents the facts and figures of the projects, reports on the successes and failures and, whenever possible, draws conclusions and points to possible solutions.
