Stable isotope analysis of iron by gas-phase electron impact mass spectrometry
The isotope abundance ratios of iron n(54Fe)/n(56Fe),n(57Fe)/n(56Fe) and n(58Fe)/n(56Fe) have been measured for the first time on the volatile iron containing compound pentakis(tri-fluorophosphane)iron Fe(PF(3))(5). A magnetic sector field mass spectrometer (Varian MAT CH5) was used whereby the sample was introduced as a gas under molecular flow conditions and ionised by electron impact. Relative precisions obtained were 0.0006 for the n(54Fe)/n(56Fe) ratio and 0.005 for the abundance ratios of the minor isotopes, as measured on the Fe(+) ion.
