Current sheets are a quasiubiquitous feature of the dynamics in strongly magnetised plasmas. They are formed from a smooth initial state under rather general conditions and are the loci of rapid magnetic reconnection. This paper focuses on the process of current sheet formation in an ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) fluid. Numerical simulations reveal that sheets evolve self-similarly with cross-sheet profiles. The simulation results are presented, the different theoretical approaches based on minimum or maximum entropy particles are reviewed, and results and conclusions are provided.
