Abstract

The Reactor Safety Working Group has established a task force to examine national practices in performing periodic safety reviews of operating nuclear power reactors within the Community. The UK has a significant number of older reactors, 26 operating for more than 20 years, and has considerable experience of periodic safety reviews as a result of the extensive long-term safety reviews of its Magnox reactors. This report describes the background to and the objectives and methodologies of reviews conducted in the UK. It describes the general results and conclusions of the reviews conducted to date for Magnox reactors, including the implications for plant modification. The report also describes how the lessons learnt from the Magnox long-term safety reviews are being incorporated into future periodic reviews planned for Magnox, AGR and PWR power stations.
