The International Chemical Safety Cards (ICSCs) project is an undertaking of the International Programme on Chemical Safety. ICSCs summarise essential health and safety information on chemical substances. This publication lists the standard phrases used to prepare ICSCs as well as the procedures and criteria used to select them. The standard phrases are used to describe the various characteristics of a chemical, the hazards associated with its use and the ways in which it should be packaged and handled in order to prevent problems to human health and the environment. Each standard phrase is allocated a five-digit number which facilitates the preparation of ICSCs on computer and simplifies the production of cards in different languages.
