In multimedia systems the interaction of the computer with the environment is enriched with sounds, voices, images, films and three-dimensional graphics which add immediacy and effectiveness to the relationship with the user and provide a virtual extension of the operational reality. This brief overview is intended to assess the current state of multimedia systems and to provide information on their general features, technological basis and main applications, and on current areas of research affecting them.
