The integration of primary metabolism and differentiation in Streptomyces coelicolor : A biochemical, physiological and genetical approachFunded under: FP2-BRIDGE
Within the framework of the Community's biotechnology research programmes, groups of contractors were brought together to constitute ELWWs, with a view to facilitating the rapid circulation and exchange of information, data and materials, and increasing mobility among research staff. The purpose of this brochure is to illustrate the work of one such ELWW in the field of integration of primary metabolism, secondary metabolism and differentiation in Streptomyces coelicolor. The current state of knowledge in this area, together with the biotechnological relevance of proposed studies and the plans for their execution, is outlined. Aspects of the research programme that are covered include: (i) the significance of the supply of carbon skeletons to secondary metabolism; (ii) antibiotic production and its link to growth rate; (iii) findings related to the synthesis and breakdown of temporary carbohydrate stores; (iv) possible changes in ribosome structure occurring during development.
