Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Within the framework of the Community's biotechnology research programmes, groups of contractors were brought together to constitute ELWWs, with a view to facilitating the rapid circulation and exchange of information, data and materials, and increasing mobility among research staff. The purpose of this brochure is to illustrate the work of one such ELWW in the field of MINE, the Microbial Information Network Europe. The MINE project was designed to harmonise and computerise data about 150,000 strains of microorganisms in European culture collections for availability on-line. The requirement for the maintenance of microorganisms and efficient data recording and computerisation are explained. The objectives of the project are presented, together with details of the data structure used, the hardware and software configurations, data entry procedures and on-line access. Possible future developments are discussed and the addresses of national network nodes are listed.
