Within the framework of the Community's biotechnology research programmes, groups of contractors were brought together to constitute ELWWs, with a view to facilitating the rapid circulation and exchange of information, data and materials, and increasing mobility among research staff. The purpose of this brochure is to illustrate the work of one such ELWW in the field of advanced monitoring and computer control of biotechnological processes. The aim of the project was to develop an integrated set of mathematical and algorithmic tools for advanced monitoring and computer control of bioreactors with a view to process optimisation. The research was performed on three levels: (i) the on-line instrumentation for data acquisition and computer supervision; (ii) advanced monitoring and computer control; (iii) computer-aided modelling. The progress made in these areas is reported, together with the significance of control science in biotechnology. The main features of CAMBIO, a dedicated workstation developed by the ELWW, are also described. This enables the bioengineer to design mathematical models of bioprocesses directly from a knowledge base.
