Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Within the framework of the Community's biotechnology research programmes, groups of contractors were brought together to constitute ELWWs, with a view to facilitating the rapid circulation and exchange of information, data and materials, and increasing mobility among research staff. The purpose of this brochure is to illustrate the work of one such ELWW in the field of structural and functional analysis of regulatory genes controlling liver-specific proteins. The long-term aims of the project were: (i) to develop methods to produce large amounts of biologically active protein for treatment; (ii) to limit over-production of proteins leading to disease states. In the first instance it was necessary to improve the technology of culture of liver cells. Both aims required an understanding of the gene controlling processes involved. Participating groups and the areas of research in which they were involved are presented and the topics covered are placed in context. A glossary of terms is also included.
