Seeds of tomorrow through genetic engineeringFunded under: FP1-BAP
Within the framework of the Community's biotechnology research programmes, groups of contractors were brought together to constitute ELWWs, with a view to facilitating the rapid circulation and exchange of information, data and materials, and increasing mobility among research staff. The purpose of this brochure is to illustrate the work of one such ELWW in the field of improvement of seed quality through genetic engineering. The areas studied in this research project were: (i) breadmaking and pasta quality; (ii) brewing quality; (iii) nutritional quality; (iv) seed development. Progress in these areas is reported, together with the techniques used and the seed characteristics that were investigated. The seeds used in this research included wheat, barley, maize and rice. The participating laboratories are listed, and the benefits and examples of cooperation are discussed.
