The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) is an international science programme which aims to promote basic research on the complex mechanisms of living organisms through international cooperation. Originally proposed by the Japanese government in June 1987, the European Commission is a Management Supporting Party, together with the G7 Summit countries. HFSP targets research fields corresponding to many of the EC research activities covered by the programmes ESPRIT, SCIENCE, BRIDGE and Medical and Health Research, in the areas of information technology, neurocomputing, adaptive intelligence and brain research, biotechnology and human genome research.
