The rapid progress in biotechnology has dramatically increased the demand for the services of microbial culture collections, for better preservation methods, the creation or upgrading of collections of particular groups of micro-organisms and for the rapid availability of reliable information on microbial properties. This article reviews the current state of research in this area, and highlights challenges for the future.
