From the outset, Community initiatives in biotechnology aimed at overcoming the isolation and fragmentation of research efforts in this area in Europe. This principle of transnational involvement and cooperation in research projects evolved into the functional concept known as European Laboratories Without Walls (ELWW). This article reviews the structure of ELWWs, and the advantages their informality and flexibility provide. Their existence helps to counter the brain drain of top scientists from Europe, and acts as a research platform for industrial development and technology transfer while maintaining confidentiality where necessary.
