The COST 48 programme in the field of oceanography was established with the aim of improving the knowledge and utilisation of primary marine biomass. The programme's activities can be split into three subgroups, one of which is concerned with phycocolloids and fine chemicals. This report contains the proceedings of the first workshop of the group. It includes contributions from 16 lecturers covering aspects of identification, chemical and physico-chemical characterisation, biochemical, biological and biomedical properties, and the use and application of both phycocolloids and fine chemicals extracted and purified from macroalgae. As a result of the workshop, three working groups have been set up within the subgroup dealing with: (i) structure/function relationships in phycocolloids; (ii) algal polysaccharide gels for biotechnology; (iii) proteins from macroalgae.
