The COST 48 programme in the field of oceanography was established with the aim of improving the knowledge and utilisation of primary marine biomass. The programme's activities can be split into three subgroups: (i) intensive cultivation and genetic improvement; (ii) phycocolloids and fine chemicals; (iii) production and utilisation of entire seaweeds. This report contains minutes of the management committee meeting, together with reports submitted by the three subgroups and those resulting from related workshops. Scientific exchanges are reported and other activities derived from the COST 48 programme are presented.
