JRC scientific achievements
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is a European scientific and technical research centre operated by the Commission of the European Communities as its in-house research organisation. With headquarters in Brussels, the Centre has eight different institutes, each with its own focus of expertise. This document, a companion volume to annual reports published by the JRC, collects together significant contributions to science and technology made by the JRC Institutes. The items were selected to demonstrate how the JRC uses its talents in various ways for the Framework programme, for providing laboratory facilities in connection with the implementation of Community policies and for supplying prenormative R&D in technical areas, where harmonisation is becoming more important as the Community and its market widens. They also indicate the breadth of experience of its staff and the scope of its expertise and equipment. The text comprises articles falling naturally into identifiable categories: (i) basic research of wide application; (ii) research with applications in the public interest; (iii) research of specific interest to industry; (iv) development of specialised instrumentation.
