In this newsletter the leading article discusses blindness and ageing. Recent events in the world of biomedical and health research are reported in the news section, including important changes in the management of the programme. This is followed by a number of articles arranged according to subject area to correspond with the Council Decision setting up the programme. Specific topics discussed include: (i) Paediatric European Network for Treatment of AIDS and HIV infection in children (PENTA); (ii) boron neutron capture therapy; (iii) the ageing process and age-related health problems and handicaps; (iv) restoration of muscle activity. News from other EC Commission services involved in health is presented and the newly formed European Public Health Association (EPHA) is described.
