Abstract

The project aims at the development of control strategies for integrated demand management (IDM) systems for use in congested European cities, and assesses the application of automatic vehicle identification and other RTI technologies to road pricing and other traffic restraint policies. An integrated system has been developed to implement a range of strategies for demand management including combination of existing approaches, toll cordon, comprehensive road pricing, and vehicle-based points. A simulation model called ORIENT was utilised within the strategic level evaluation. The preferred system design for an IDM system comprises dedicated roadside equipment linked into a telecommunications network and central processing units.
