Abstract

Preliminary work on this project reviewed existing tidal flow systems, which allow flexibility in dedicating road lanes to cope with changing traffic demand in urban and motorway areas. User and operator requirements were analysed and control strategies identified. Three simulation models were developed to represent parameters such as vehicle movements, traffic and driver behaviour, and field trials were carried out in Barcelona and Lisbon. Recommendations on operation and installation of tidal flow systems have been produced, based on both simulations and field tests.
