Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Abstract

The main objectives of the project are to define and produce prototypes of control strategies for motorways both on a local and co-ordinated level and to develop simulated appropriate schemes for motorway networks, all based on existing methods for motorway traffic management - variable message signs for route recommendations and ramp metering - in Europe and the USA. Three areas are focused on: traffic flow modelling, existing models being improved and adapted to real-life conditions and extended to cover whole road networks; traffic flow control, where aid-to-decision and fully automated control strategies are investigated; and field trials, focusing on system flexibility in development of a route guidance facility.
