Abstract

The objectives of the ITHACA project are the development of a classification of variables for a new proforma for in-depth accident data collection at an European level and the prototyping of an expert system for in-depth accident investigations. For both areas the project concentrated on human factors as well as vehicle, environmental and social factors, but the road user's behaviour appeared to be the most critical risk factor. The emphasis on the pre-crash phase of an accident was due to the fact that the safety-relevant RTI-measures are mostly designed for accident avoidance and because information systems are developed for this accident phase.
