Abstract

Polarimetric system distortion parameters are computed by using an active radar calibrator (ARC) oriented at 45 , a trihedral corner reflector and an extended reciprocal target. The canonical model for a polarimetric radar is modified to take into account the generation of the signal by the active calibration device. This allows the exact computation of the channel imbalance terms by using the polarimetric characteristics of the two point targets and the signal recorded by the ARC. The leakage terms are computed by assuming the reciprocity of the extended target and adopting the covariance matrix approach. A simplified error model is developed to verify the reciprocity assumption before the computation of the leakage terms. The algorithm is successfully applied to JPL/AIRSAR polarimetric data.
