High-pressure phase and compressibility of NpSe
NpSe was synthesised by the reaction of selenium vapour with neptunium metal in a sealed evacuated quartz tube. Single crystals were obtained by subsequent mineralisation, i.e. keeping the compacted powder of the compound approximately 50 K below its melting point for several weeks. The polycrystalline samples employed in this high pressure work were obtained by grinding samples of these single crystals. At ambient pressure, the monochalcogenide NpSe exhibits the NaCl-type (B1) structure. Results show that at approximately 23 Gpa NpSe transforms to a CsCl-type (B2) allotrope.
