This paper gives a detailed description of the recently discovered I-mode regime on TEXTOR which can be achieved in stationary discharges for a wide range of plasma densities and currents. Typical plasma parameters of an I-mode discharge heated successively with 1.7 MW NBI-co and 1.7 MW ICRH are summarised. Characteristics of these discharges are: (i) hot-ion mode behaviour is obtained with central ion temperatures as high as 6 keV; (ii) the profiles for electron density and temperature near the limiter can be as steep as in divertor ELMY H-mode discharges; (iii) I-mode discharges obtained with NBI-co and NBI-counter have a strong profile peaking similar to the one in supershots. The existence of the I-mode is bound by beta(p) and beta(t) limits.
