Abstract

The potential role of isotope dilution (ID) in the future organisation of traceability and comparability of chemical measurements is described. It is essential that in isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS): (i) measurements are in SI units (moles); (ii) results are matrix-independent; (iii) complicated chemical measurements are reduced to simple physical measurements. The report also discusses the need for enriched isotopes, carefully evaluated measurement procedures and high quality (cheaper) instrumentation.
