Data derived from earth observation sensors are an essential source of information about the earth and its environment. A data network that promotes the standardisation and integration of data derived from these sensors has been developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Centre for Earth Observations (CEO). This paper describes the present status of the CEO including the results of a pre-feasibility study undertaken by a consortium of European companies led by the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC). It also outlines how the CEO will develop so as to cope with user requirements for data and information in the era of polar platforms and beyond.
