Evaluating multi-temporal ERS-1 SAR data for tropical forest mapping : Data selection, processing and target identification
In the frame of the joint ESA-EC TREES project, ERS-1 SAR data over a test site in West Africa are evaluated on their information content for mapping tropical forest ecosystems. The feasibility of forest/non-forest discrimination using mono- and multi-temporal ERS-1 SAR data at a high pixel spacing (25 m) is investigated using a supervised classification methodology on selected target areas extracted from the imagery. An assessment of the optical acquisition period and number of acquisitions is also undertaken for this specific geographical area.
