This paper focuses on HRA in the context of an external situation. This is particularly important for a cognitive reliability analysis (CRA) which looks at the role and reliability of human cognition. The role of the CRA is to provide the basis for quantitative estimates of the probability of certain events happening or of certain cognitive functions failing. It also provides the basis for an assessment of the likely functioning of the joint man-machine system with regard to overall reliability and safety. Retrospective and prospective analyses, the context of cognition, and context and error modes are all examined.
