This document describes the steps taken to produce, characterise and validate a new lyophilised serum reference material for human proteins. Protocols for each step including donor selection, collection, preservation, transportation, processing and value transfer were carefully documented. When the product was employed in an extensive immunochemical value assignment exercise by over 30 laboratories it became clear that the material met the specifications set out in the original proposal. Stability and homogeneity have been demonstrated. Values have been assigned to the material, and instructions for their use are provided.
