Abstract

This article describes the progress of the DRIVE programmes I and II which aim to create favourable conditions for the development of an integrated road transport environment (IRTE), through pre-competitive and collaborative R&D in the field of information technology (IT) and communications applied to road transport. The aims of DRIVE I and key dates in the history of the programme are summarised. Strategic initiatives are presented and the success of the programme is discussed. New additional aims for DRIVE II are presented along with the core areas within its workplan. Projects which are being further developed and implemented under DRIVE II are described.
