The STD (Science and Technology for Development) programme has made important contributions towards sustainable development in developing countries. Details of its focus and objectives, programme approach, scientific achievements and barriers and benefits are given. The key statistics for STD 2 are presented while the five areas of the STD 3 work programme are outlined. Projects concerned with a vaccine against malaria, the fight against drought and research into the improvement of cooking bananas receive special attention.
