The Joint Research Centre is a European scientific and research centre providing expert, independent support and advice in the development of Community policies. It carries out major scientific projects at a European level, and makes an important contribution to the education and training of European scientists and technologists. The various institutes of the JRC are presented and details of their focus of expertise are given. The JRC as a whole and its numerous activities are dealt with under the following headings: (i) JRC people and places; (ii) specific research programmes; (iii) support for Community policies; (iv) exploratory research; (v) scientific networks and collaborative research; (vi) assessing JRC's knowledge and expertise. A list of key JRC publications is provided.
