Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

European Union support for the development of non-nuclear energy has two main strands. Firstly, support for research and development of novel energy technologies, under the JOULE programme, and secondly the demonstration and promotion of energy technologies that have progressed beyond the research and development phase, under THERMIE. These two RTD programmes complement other energy-related activities supported by the Commission, principally SAVE and ALTENER. This article sets out the objectives of the JOULE programme and gives details of its funding. Projects supported by the THERMIE programme which fall into the following four sectors are described: (i) rational use of energy (RUE); (ii) renewable energy sources (RES); (iii) solid fuels (SF); (iv) hydrocarbons (HC). The future of European energy programmes is discussed and a list of organisations for the promotion of energy technologies is provided.
