This article discusses the Marine Science and Technology Research and Development programme (MAST) which was set up to enhance scientific and technical knowledge of the marine environment within the European Community. The programme's aims are explained. Its four priority research areas are outlined and then discussed individually under the following headings: (i) marine sciences; (ii) coastal zone science and engineering; (iii) marine technology; (iv) supporting initiatives. Achievements so far are presented and the future direction of MAST is discussed.
