1993 has been designated the European Year of the Elderly. This reference book gives a scientific overview of the state of the art in research on ageing and technology. The book consists of studies on ageing by various disciplines such as physiology, psychology, sociology, economics, demography, experimental gerontology, epidemiology, ergonomics and design. Relevant research findings on ageing processes in society are reviewed by experts. Other sections concentrate on areas in technology where such knowledge may be applied. They are divided into the following categories: (i) mobility and transport; (ii) communication and information processing; (iii) housing; (iv) home health care technology. Apart from individual papers, a general view of each is presented in these chapters. Both technological advances and practical applications in society are documented.
