Research in biomedical engineering has been an integral part of the EC medical research programmes since their origin in the late 1970s. The main objective has been to promote closer collaboration at the European level between engineers and clinicians. This part has grown to thirty projects at the end of the 4th EC Medical and Health Research Programme. This book gives an overview of the activities and results of those projects, grouped into three sections: (i) diagnostic methods and monitoring (including imaging); (ii) treatment and rehabilitation; (iii) technical and clinical evaluation. The contributions cover such topics as medical decision making aids, sensors, automation for cytometry and cytogenetics, magnetic resonance, electrical impedance tomography, biomagnetism, positron emission tomography, biomaterials and heart assist and replacement technologies, and rehabilitation technologies. Each project is presented by its project leader.
