This report deals with detailed methodologies in the development of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) assay, in relation to the incidence of EGFR-positivity in human breast cancer. To restrict the variation in EGFR-assay results between laboratories, it was decided to establish an efficient analytical method which gives reproducible results with high comparability between laboratories. The main aims of the research were to prepare the radioactive EGF-ligand and to establish a procedure to separate efficiently bound and free ligand.
