  • Certification of the fatty acid profile and mass fraction of butyric acid (N-butanoic acid), cholesterol and three individual sterols of an anhydrous milk fat reference material with values for information on triglycerides, minor fatty acid

This report describes the preparation of an anhydrous milk fat reference material, the certification of its butyric acid, cholesterol, B-sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol mass fraction, and its fatty acid profile. Details of the studies undertaken to demonstrate the homogeneity and stability of the material are given, together with the results of a preliminary intercomparison of methods for butyric acid and sterols. The results of the three certification exercises which involved a total of fifteen laboratories, using a variety of methods, are presented and discussed. Indicative values are given for minor fatty acids, the absolute sterol mass fraction, triglycerides by carbon number and vanillin - a marker compound (added during the preparation of RM 164) used in accordance with Community regulations.
